A Word From the Director General
Kurt Edwards
Sustainability takes center stage this month. The topic will feature prominently at CJI London with two panels: one on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and another on ESG challenges to business aviation, which will feature critics of the industry and yours truly. It will be an opportunity for a rational exchange of views on business aviation’s commitment to broad sustainability (economic, societal, and environmental), something the industry has called for in response to activist protests. We have a good story to tell and must engage with groups outside the industry on solutions to shared challenges.
A key component of those solutions is SAF, the focus of SAF Investor also in London later in the month. SAF will likely enable two thirds of the carbon-emissions reductions necessary to reach our goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. It is critical that we engage with the fuel-production, fuel-distribution, and financial communities as well as governments to accelerate the production, distribution, and uptake of SAF around the world. The gathering in London later this month will bring together leaders from those communities to advance the conversation toward solutions.
As always, safety is key to our continued operational success. We look forward to participating at EBAA’s Air OPS 21-22 February in Brussels. Members of IBAC’s IS-BAH and IS-BAO teams will be there to speak about best safety practices and recent developments at ICAO. Please be sure to connect with them.
Last, ICAO will hold its Industry Consultative Forum on cybersecurity in February, an informal forum for the ICAO Council to learn about important challenges facing aviation. IBAC will attend and plans to report on the conversation and its implications for business aviation at the March Planning and Operations Committee meeting in Fort Worth.
ICAO

SUSTAINABILITY
Claude Hurley, Director, Environment & Flight Operations
Work continues on setting the stage for successful outcomes on environmental, flight operations, and Advanced Air Mobility provisions at ICAO that are aligned with business aviation capabilities and priorities. As well, IBAC continues to engage in industry-wide efforts, participating, for example, in ATAG’s 2024 strategy meeting where representatives from 12 industry associations and 16 manufacturers discussed climate change, Sustainable Aviation Fuels, and broader sustainability topics. IBAC’s nominees on ICAO environmental working groups also had a busy month, making solid progress on CAEP’s work program.
