A Word From Kurt Edwards - IBAC Director-General

Kurt Edwards

It was a pleasure seeing so many contacts from member associations, industry partners, and IS-BAH and IS-BAO participants at NBAA BACE in October.  Thank you for stopping by our stand or joining us to recognize the milestone achievements of several IS-BAO- and IS-BAH-registered organizations.  Allow me also to thank the members of IBAC’s Governing Board who traveled to Orlando for our first fully in-person board meeting in three years.  While it made for a longer week, please know that IBAC is grateful for your support and guidance.

The industry’s commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 was a clear theme throughout the show.  CTX Carbon TradeXchange, our partner in IBAC EX, joined us at the show to explain the role of high-quality offsets as one of the tools that operators may use now in their efforts to reduce emissions.  A 50 percent discount to register with CTX is available through the end of November via the IBAC website.

I’d like to call your attention to an article in Aviation for Women this month, featuring two of IBAC’s team members: Katherine Hilst, Operations Manager for IS-BAO, and Yvonne Marinus, Auditor Accreditation Manager for both IS-BAO and IS-BAH.  The article highlights their professional journeys and commitment to business aviation safety.

We need your help.  IBAC is developing a thought-leadership platform to benefit the global business aviation community.  The success of this effort will depend on the interest and participation of you and other community members.  We would appreciate hearing from you about topics you’d like to have explored, whether of global, regional, or national interest.  Please take a moment to complete this brief survey.

Finally, I’m looking forward to the official launch conference of the Irish Business and General Aviation Association in Adare, Ireland, 17 November. Please join us in an overdue celebration of IBGAA’s launch.  And I hope to see many of you in Dubai for the MEBAA Show 6-8 December.  It is great to reconnect with colleagues after nearly three years without these events that bring together our industry.

The 23rd IS-BAO Standards Board met on 17 October to review operator inputs and suggestions along with Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) soon to be released in ICAO Annex 6.  The Standards Board determined there would be no changes to the 20th Edition for this cycle.  Documents summarizing the Standards Board decisions will be available early January 2023.  Thank you to all the Standards Board operator volunteers, guests, and Civil Aviation Authorities for attending and continuing to make IS-BAO an internationally recognized standard for the industry.

In coordination with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the IS-BAO Programme has produced guidance material regarding the FAA’s Safety Management System Voluntary Program (SMSVP). This guidance will be available on 9 November to registered operators via the IS-BAO Documents Portal – BAO Supporting Documents Tab.

The IS-BAO Team attended the EBAA Safety Summit in Cologne, Germany 2-3 Nov 2022.  Great discussions with EASA, operators, industry experts, OEMs and Civil Aviation Authorities.

Later this month Stéphane De Wolf, IS-BAO Operations Specialist, and Daniel Devraignes, IS-BAO Deputy Director will be attending the ICAO Safety Management Panel in Sao Paulo, Brazil where they will represent business aviation to discuss proposals to the 5th edition of the Safety Management Manual in support of Annex 19 Amendment 2.

In a tribute to the 20th Anniversary of IS-BAO this year, we are excited to offer a special Safety Savings Bundle for new entrants where they can purchase the IS-BAO Document Suite and a single attendee to the IS-BAO Fundamentals Workshop at a 20% savings for a limited time. Final details will be available in the coming days or contact info@ibac.org.
